Sitecore's story began in 1998 when five University of Copenhagen alumni cofounded Pentia A/S, a systems integration company that focused on implementing websites built on Microsoft technologies. Since building and managing websites required developer expertise at the time two of the founders came up with an idea to automate those processes. Their invention patented in the United States under the name „Method for building and managing a web site” was turned into a product that we would call today a web content management system.
Three years later Sitecore became a separate business that initially sold content management systems in the Danish market. Through organic growth and strategic acquisitions of web publishing solutions provider Pectora and Microsoft Commerce Server and a majority investment in social media marketing and community engagement application provider Komfo it became a global provider of customer experience management software. In 2014 Sitecore tripled the size of its North American headquarters to 36,000 square feet in Sausalito, California.
